COVID-19 letters Collective

introduction

Dear Stranger,

Thank you for finding your way to this site! Originally, this initiative began with the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it is a continual Letters to Strangers service carried on past the start of the pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted lives around the world, leaving many of us feeling confused, lonely, overwhelmed, and scared. But you are not alone! Hope is often best received by example. With others’ stories of support, healing, powering through, or even just processing things slowly but surely, we hope that you give yourself the permission to be unglamorous, heroic, human - whatever makes you feel more you and brings some light back in your life.

With this goal in mind, Letters to Strangers is announcing the COVID-19 Letters Collective [and Legacy!]. Using our anonymous letter exchange platform, you can submit a letter (or multiple!). You can write words of encouragement for others or share your own experience– we’ll sort these letters by themes and share the appropriate and relevant themed collections with community organizations such as nursing homes, hospitals, and more.

To get started, follow the steps below!

1. write & submit your letter

Please read our sample letters and letter-writing guidelines before you write! We prefer that you handwrite your letter and upload a picture of it, but you can upload a typed document as well.

  1. Click here to visit our letter-exchange platform

  2. Create an account or sign in via Google - it’s free!

  3. Upload your letter. Remember to keep things anonymous! That means: don’t mention any personal details, such as your name, your address, or your exact workplace and job title. Please also avoid uploading images with your face in it.

2. nominate an organization

If you know of an organization or community partner that would like to receive a compilation of these letters, please fill out this form here! We’re happy to put together a compiled video of letters for that organization based on relevant themes.

Please note:

  • This may take some time, so don’t be afraid to follow up if you don’t hear back within a week

  • This is not designed to accept nominations for individuals. If you have an individual instead of an org in mind to receive letters, please share with them our online letter-exchange platform, where they can read letters of their own

  • We reserve the right to decline a partnership if we find that the group you nominated conflicts with our organizational values

love, a stranger

That’s all for now! If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, don’t hesitate to contact us. We know this is a tough time. Maybe words can only do so much, but the echoing of silence in our own heads may be far more sinister. We hope that at least, with these letters, you get a chance to hear your own thoughts out loud and know that they matter. That you can listen to a stranger’s voice and remember that we are fighting this together. And that is where the power shines.
